MANILA - Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Tuesday opened the COVID-19 quarantine facility at Pier 15 in Manila, built through a P100-million donation from the Lopez Group of Companies.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said that it has finished retrofitting the Eva Macapagal Super Terminal into a COVID-19 treatment facility and that it is now ready to accept patients showing mild symptoms.

Lorenzana commended the quality of the facility, which is meant for returning overseas Filipino workers and seafarers.

"Marami na akong napuntahan na quarantine facilities pero so far, ito ‘yung the best na nakita ko. Comfortable ito sa mga pasyente. We are very much satisfied upon seeing this,” Lorenzana said.

The facility was designed to accommodate patients with mild, advanced and severe infections. It has 211 cubicles with hospital beds, portable toilets, cargo containers for showers, and open-air dining facilities.

It also features airconditioning and airtight doors to prevent aerosols containing the COVID-19 coronavirus from spreading.

(Government did not spend anything on this. The Lopez group came to us and gave us P100 million to fight COVID. I said let's build a facility, let's deliver. What's left we can use to buy mobile rapid testing centers. We can also put dashboards at airports to see available quarantine facilities that may be used by arriving OFWs.)
