MANILA - No data connection? No problem. Newly accredited ride-hailing firm "Hype" said on Wednesday its system will allow users to book rides via text messaging.

Hype, which just got the green light to start operations from land transport regulators today, said their system will know if users don't have mobile internet access.

"So kung wala na kayong data, made-detect po ng system namin na wala po kayong data, so you can just text your location, at saka kung saan po kayo pupunta, anong type of vehicle po yung pinipili nyo," said Jen Silan, chief operating officer of Hype Transport System Inc.

(If you don't have data [connection], the system will detect that you don't have data, so you can just text your location, your destination, what type of vehicle you prefer.)

Silan said the system will text back the name of the driver, the car's model, plate number and the fare.

Like Uber, drivers will also not be able to see the destination of a passenger until the passenger has boarded the vehicle. Silan said this was to prevent drivers from refusing bookings based on the destination.

Silan added that Hype's fares will be very competitive and will not use per-minute charging that Grab uses.

Hype is currently accepting drivers for accreditation and will launch its services on May 26.

Silan said the Hype app will be available for download a week before their grand launch.
