MANILA - San Miguel Corp on Friday said it offered to buy more fresh produce from farmers to help sustain their income and to ensure stable food supply as country continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company said it was looking for farmers producing rice, corn, cassava, coconut oil, pork and chicken nationwide. Its unit ,San Miguel Foods Inc, produces fresh meats, poultry, processed meat, flour, dairy products, spreads and coffee.
“We want to make sure that farmers will directly benefit. It’s not only people in Metro Manila who are in need of help but also, our kababayans in the provinces, including our farmers,” SMC president and COO Ramon Ang said.
Ang said he hoped to encourage more farmers to plant by ensuring they have a market for their products.
The country's coronavirus response task force earlier assured agriculture workers that farming and fishing are allowed during the Luzon lockdown.
