MANILA, Philippines -- With the release of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) list of top individual taxpayers for 2013, the question some are asking is: How much did the country's billionaires pay in income tax?
The highest ranking businessman on the BIR's list of top taxpayers isn't the Philippines' richest man Henry Sy, Sr.
It's Megaworld Corp. founder and chairman Andrew Tan. Tan was 5th on the BIR's list with income tax payment of P67.18 million. Tan is the fourth richest man in the Philippines and ranked 330 on Forbes' Billionaires List for 2015 with a net worth of $4.8 billion.
On the other hand, the elder Sy paid income tax of P18.5 million, which placed him on 85th spot.
His son Henry Sy, Jr. was in 71st place in the BIR list with P19.86 million, while daughter Teresita Sy was in 97th place with P16.2 million and Hans Sy was in 109th place with P15.2 million.
John Gokongwei, Jr. was 289th on the BIR list with income tax payment of P9.26 million. His son Lance Gokongwei, who is at the helm of JG Summit, paid slightly more taxes with P9.92 million on 254th spot.
Ports tycoon Enrique Razon Jr. was 50th on the BIR's list with P22.87 million in income tax payments.
Tycoon George Ty ranked 40th with P26.28 million in income tax payments. His son Arthur Ty ranked 73rd, with income tax payments of P19.63 million.
Lucio Co, who owns the chain of Puregold stores, was 137th on the list with income tax payments of P13.66 million.
On 142nd place is Lucio Tan, who owns Philippine Airlines, Asia Brewery and other businesses. He paid P13.33 million in income taxes in 2013.
Jollibee founder Tony Tan Caktiong ranked 248th on the BIR list with income tax payment of P10.1 million.
Prudential’s Robert Coyiuto Jr. paid P7.36 million in income taxes in 2013, placing him on 399th place.
Not in the BIR's list of top 500 individual taxpayers for 2013 were DMCI's David Consunji and former senator and Vista Land chairman Manny Villar.
