PARIS - China's Huawei unveiled its photography-centric P20 smartphones here on Tuesday, touting three lenses on the back as it challenges flagship devices from rivals Apple and Samsung.

The triple lens set up, engineered with Germany's Leica, is exclusive to the P20 Pro, while the smaller P20 has two lenses. The additional lens on the Pro allows up to 10 times zoom while the first two lenses shoot in color and monochrome.

Both devices can shoot slow motion at 960 frames per second and an "ultra snapshot" mode can snap pictures in 0.3 second, Huawei said.

"This phone is designed for photography," said Huawei consumer business group CEO Richard Yu.

"This is a big jump with new technologies," Yu said, explaining why the P Series nomenclature went to P20 from P10 instead of P11.

Huawei, which overtook Apple in November last year to become the world's second-biggest smartphone vendor, unveiled the P20 line at the Grand Palais in one of the most photographed cities in the world, underscoring its camera capabilities.

The Huawei launch came a month after Samsung took the wraps off its Galaxy S9 and S9+ at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Yu started his presentation with video testimonials from its partner carriers in Europe, including Orange, Vodafone and Telefonica.

Huawei and Samsung are pushing improved smartphone cameras and artificial intelligence-assisted performance as Apple reels from reportedly lower-than-expected sales for its iPhone X, the tenth version of its most important product.

The P20 Pro and P20 are both powered by Huawei's own Kirin 970 processor with built-in AI capabilities that automatically adapt camera, battery and performance settings depending on the owner's usage.

The AI-assisted camera on the P20 and P20 Pro instantly recognizes subjects such as food, animals, landscape and dark scenes and adjusts the settings automatically to produce the best shot.

The P20 Pro variant has a 40-megapixel RGB sensor, a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor. The P20 has a 12-megapixel main sensor and a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor.

The P20 Pro sports a 6.1-inch screen While the P20 has a 5.8-inch screen. Both phones have notches at the top that houses the front-facing camera.

The P20 and P20 Pro will be available in black and midnight blue and new "gradient" colors of twilight and pink gold that appear to shift from the top to the bottom of the glass back.
