MANILA -- The Department of Labor and Employment on Tuesday urged big companies to pay their employees during the 1-month-long quarantine in Luzon to stop the spread of COVID-19, which shuttered all but essential services for millions in the Philippines' most populous island.

Labor Sec. Silvestre Bello III also reiterated President Rodrigo Duterte's appeal to advance workers' 13th month pay when possible. Under law, 13th month pay should be paid before Christmas Day.

Addressing the Sy, Ty and Gokongwei families, Bello said: "Yung madidisplace na workers, sila na muna mag-shoulder ng 1 month salary."

(They should consider shouldering the 1 month salary of displaced workers.)

Displaced workers, for minimum wage, can also help government disinfect its buildings under an emergency jobs program, he said.
