MANILA - The rise of artificial intelligence, while it threatens to displace some business process outsourcing workers, also opens opportunities for higher paid jobs, the head of an employment portal said Thursday.
A receptionist, for example, whose manual task is replaced by a machine can upgrade his or her skills and become the operator of computer programs, said Jobstreet.com country manager Philip Gioca.
"Technologies will always be at the forefront of the digital space. I think the better view is there will always be opportunities as long as people try to develop new product and opportunities," Gioca told reporters.
A Senate committee earlier this week investigated the threat of AI on the job security of 1.4 million people in the BPO sector.
"It's already happening. Certain roles will be replaced. Some companies have already laid off a lot of people," Gioca said, without giving figures.
"When you introduce artificial intelligence to replace human capabilities, it has a tendency to create lower roles and higher roles," he said.
