MANILA - Authorities in the capital agreed on Thursday to improve coordination to help ease traffic congestion.

The Metropolitan Development Authority was asked to issue permits for road works to the Department of Public Works and Highways instead of contractors to ensure that regulations are followed, said public works undersecretary Romeo Momo.

The DPWH also urged the MMDA to allow the agency to apply for an excavation clearance once the project is advertised instead of waiting for the contract to be awarded.

The MMDA, in turn, asked the DPWH to ensure that traffic management plans can be put in place even before a road project starts.

Contractors should be reminded that excavation in major roads can only be done between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., MMDA traffic discipline office director Neomie Recio said.
