MANILA -- The Japanese president of Toyota Motor in the Philippines took public transport in Manila for a day to experience commuting in his new assignment, calling it a "good learning experience."
The post by Atsuhiro Okamoto on Facebook was shared nearly 10,500 times and got 24,000 reactions 9 hours after it was posted. Toyota Motor Philippines confirmed the post to ABS-CBN News.
Amused Facebook users thanked Okamoto for his gesture while some asked him to use his position at the Japanese carmaker to help improve transportation in the Philippines.
During his "Genchi Genbutsu," or "Go and See," Okamoto rode a bus and a jeepney. He took a round trip on the MRT and a tricycle ride in Manila's Tondo district, photos showed.
"For me, it's a good learning experience. I realize that unlike Japan or Singapore, the Philippines’ current mass transport system is not enough to accommodate the huge number of daily commuters," he said in the post.
"I would like Toyota to take part in this big challenge to upgrade the quality of life for many Filipinos," he said.
Okamoto assumed the leadership of Toyota Motor Philippines early this year.
