MANILA - Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Nestor Espenilla said Sunday he was recovering from a bout with tongue cancer and was expecting a full recovery.
The 59-year-old Espenilla, who assumed office in July last year, said he was declared "cancer-free" by his doctors after surgery and finished radiation therapy for "insurance."
In a text message from Jerusalem where he was on pilgrimage, Espenilla said the disease was diagnosed last November and the treatment caused dry throat and mouth sores leading to speaking difficulties.
"My doctors say I’m now cancer-free. So I don’t expect this curve ball to slow me down," he said.
Espenilla said his doctors expected "more or less a full recovery in a month or so."
"Now, that’s my personal normalization. I just have to hang on and be patient. Meanwhile, it’s work as usual for me. Onward with the financial market reforms!" he said.
Espenilla was present at the Monetary Board's February 8 meeting, where borrowing rates were kept steady, but he did not attend the subsequent press briefing.
