MANILA - Vehicle sales fell 11.8 percent in January due to the eruption of Taal Volcano, industry groups said on Wednesday.
The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association said 23,723 vehicles were sold in January, compared to 26,888 units sold in the same month last year.
"Majority of plants and some dealerships located in South Luzon were badly hit by ashfall, also affecting operations in some areas of Metro Manila. Some companies were also forced to temporarily suspend its operations for safety reasons,” said CAMPI president Rommel Gutierrez.
The industry, however, is optimistic that sales will bounce back in the coming months now that operations are back on track.
"We will continue to work double time to catch-up on last month's losses," Gutierrez said.
