MANILA - Shakey's Pizza Asia Ventures and Century Pacific Food Inc said Friday they were "plastic-neutral," converting 100 percent of their plastic waste to energy.
The two members of the Po family's Century Pacific Group said plastic waste is turned into energy "co-processing" that uses heat to destroy and recover thermal or mineral properties.
Shakey's Pizza Asia operates the pizza restaurant chain of the same name while Century Pacific Food manufactures Century Tuna and 555 brands of canned seafood.
The energy produced from the waste serves an fuel for Republic Cement, replacing coal, the companies told the stock exchange.
In 2019, Century Pacific, Republic Cement along with Friends of Hope agreed to co-process "post-consumer plastic waste" and convert it to energy.
“While co-processing is not the perfect solution, it can mitigate the environmental impact of plastic usage,” said CPG president Christopher Po.
“With more Filipino companies embracing the plastic-neutrality concept, we are confident that we are making strides for a greener, stronger Republic, said Republic Cement president Nabil Francis.
