HONG KONG - Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific announced Wednesday it will expand its global freighter network with the launch of services to two new destinations in the United States.
The airline will add Miami and Houston on March 6 to its list of US freighter destinations, which already includes New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The aviation industry has been suffering from weakened demand for travel and air cargo services since the financial crisis hit in the second half of last year.
"Our cargo business is currently facing a big challenge due to the worldwide economic downturn, making it all the more important to seek out new markets and find ways to develop our business over the long term," said Rupert Hogg, the company's director for cargo.
The new service, due to operate three times a week, follows the addition of Jakarta in Indonesia and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to the Cathay Pacific freighter network in January.
