Humble beginnings: Antitrust chief shares journey to being a boss

Former Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan's journey to the top of his field was not an easy one. 

Balisacan, who is now chairman of the Philippine Competition Commission, recalled how his father had to work as a tenant in a farm and then as a janitor to support their family in Ilocos Norte. 

He said that at one point they even had to "squat" on someone else's property. Balisacan said he only learned that they were "squatters" when they got evicted from the land. 

For the chief of the country's antitrust watchdog, his humble beginnings were instrumental in his chosen field as an economist.

"My passion for development work has really been shaped by that lifetime experience," Balisacan said.
