Telecom Corp., New Zealand's largest telephone company, is transferring 250 call center jobs to the Philippines to help reduce costs.

Telecom spokesman Mark Watts said the company will restructure six of its contact centers and move the 250 jobs to Manila over the next 18 months.

The move will bring staff in Manila to 700, with 1,600 jobs remaining in New Zealand, the company said in a statement.

Telecom chief executive of retail Alan Gourdie says the move follows 12 months of trials, which proved outsourced call centers could match New Zealand standards.
