MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Internal Revenue warns the public against people who pose as BIR agents.

BIR deputy commissioner Nelso Aspe said they have been receiving numerous complaints regarding the matter.

The complainants said someone would call them and tell them they underpaid their taxes.

The caller would then tell a potential victim to settle the underpaid taxes or face charges.

Aspe reminds all taxpayers not to fall prey to this kind of illegal operation.

"Siguro tatantyahin nila yung kausap, kung kaya niyang mauto na makipagmeet.  Yung ibang mahina, baka utusan na iwan na lang ang pera sa isang lugar, sila na bahala sa problema mo," Aspe said.

The BIR said it does not conduct transactions over the phone.

"Before we audit, we send you a formal notice in writing that we are auditing you," BIR commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares said. - With reports from Chiara  Zambrano, ABS-CBN News and ANC
