MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday said Cebu City should build trains or elevated roadways to improve traffic in the area.
Duterte graced the annual Sinulog Festival where he told Cebuanos that a major problem of Cebu City was its narrow roads which could no longer be widened "because Cebu is an old city."
The President said a commuter train or elevated roads may solve Cebu City's traffic problems.
"Pinakagwapong alternative is really to build roadways sa itaas. You can do it here. Pagsugod ngari og naa moy dalan pa ngari, space. You can start with a railroad commuter unya ang taas himuon na ninyong bag-ong dalan."
(I think the best alternative is really to build roadways sa itaas. You can do it here. You can start here if there’s enough space. You can start with a railroad commuter and make a new road above.)
Duterte said he would help Cebu with this project, which would likely be financed by China.
"So ang kuan ana kung kuwang gyud mo. But huwam ana gikan sa China ug... America wala na. Way ikahatag ang America. Muhatag ang America mga armas. Mao nang mangita ka'g kontra. [laughter] Ang busog diha ang military. Padala tanan."
(It will come to that if you really need more money. But the loan would come from China and.. America can’t give us anything apart from arms. But then we would have to look for an enemy. The military will benefit. Everything will be provided.)
Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy's Udenna Infrastructure Corp and its foreign partners were granted original proponent status for the Cebu Rail Project in 2018.
The proposed Cebu railway, however, is not included in the revised list of flagship projects in the government's Build Build website, although the Metro Cebu Expressway is listed.
