MANILA, Philippines -  After the announcement of an increase in water charges and PhilHealth contributions, now comes higher electricity rates.

Meralco on Wednesday announced an increase in the generation charge for January of about P0.31/kwh. Taxes and other charges also went up by P0.05/kwh, which means the total increase in electricity bills will be P0.36/kwh.

For consumers using 101 kwh, the hike is equivalent to P16.16; 200 kwh usage - P32; 300 kwh usage - P48; 400 kwh usage - P64; and 500 kwh usage- P80.

Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga says all other components of the generation side went down except for Napocor charges which went up by P0.44/kwh.

Meralco utility economics head Larry Fernandez says the gencharge hike would have been minimized or neutralized if the Napcor rates did not increase.

Zaldarriaga has advised consumers to start adopting energy saving measures now that a lot of utilities are raising their rates,

Also this month, Meralco will start releasing notices to its customers who need to pay more bill deposits.

Around  91,000 customers each month need to update their bill deposit payments, meaning their deposit is no longer sufficient to cover their current consumption.

The payment will be staggered in 12 equal monthly installments to minimize the impact of the additional charge to a number of consumers.
