MANILA – Consumers will have a brief respite from the price hike obtained by Maynilad Water Services Inc. from the arbitration panel after the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) regulatory office says it will seek clarification from the panel regarding the figures released by Maynilad.

The MWSS regulatory office said Maynilad's figures "are different from the figures appearing in the award.”

But chief regulator Joel Yu will not reveal what their figure is, adding that they will clarify the issue with the International Court of Arbitration's appeals panel.

The regulatory office has 30 days to do this.

After the process, the regulatory office will still decide on the appeal of Maynilad to implement a staggered increase, which can also take some time.

The consequence will therefore be a delay in the implementation of the average spike of P3.06 per cubic meter.
