On Instagram: The big shots of Philippine business and politics, and the watches they wear

We’ve found ourselves a watchspotter.

We’re always on the lookout for the next addictive Instagram to follow, and most recently a friend led us to the handle @watch_mnl. The account features some of the biggest names in Philippine business and politics—but its main interest, as you may have guessed, is in what’s coiled ‘round the wrists of VIPs.

Browsing through the already pretty deep feed, we noticed there are quite a few fans of the Rolex Day Date among this privileged set, and that the Panerai Luminar’s heft and minimalist design seem to draw the stylish guys in. The choices of timepiece often match the wearer’s public persona, or they clue us in to a facet of his or her personality we might have missed.

Jaime Augusto Zobel De Ayala, the chairman and CEO of Ayala Corporation, is featured on the maiden post wearing the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, iconic for its octagonal bezel shape and trademark “tapisserie” pattern. Like JAZA himself, the timepiece speaks of elegance and commands attention without being over the top.

Somewhere else on the feed, we’re liking his aviation inspired Rolex Air-King as well, with its distinctive black dial and Oystersteel case.

Senator Manny Paquiao’s arm candy—a bedazzling Rolex GMT Master II—screams ‘Notice Me’ in this photo. The website superwatchman.com pegs the prize of the boxer’s watch, “a 40mm 18ct yellow gold” piece “set with pavĂ© diamonds and black sapphires” to be “around $175,000.”

Real estate magnate and the only Filipino who made it to Bloomberg’s top 500 billionaires list this year, Manny Villar, is seen wearing a gold Jaeger-Le Coultre Reverso in this photo. It seems to be one of the billionaire’s most favored watch, as he’s been caught wearing it on several occasions. What’s great about this watch is the seconds function in front. We thought he could have picked a watch more proportionate to the size of his wrist, but perhaps the busy boss prefers something lighter to wear.

Secret Fresh owner and influencer DJ Big Boy Cheng’s Richard Mille RM-030 watch reflects the Uratex heir’s playful nature and keen attention to detail. Our research tells us this watch features detachable automatic rotor to prevent overwinding and has a power-reserve indicator.

Internationally known industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue is seen wearing this stainless steel Patek Philippe Nautilus 5980, unique for the rounded octagonal shape of its bezel and embossed dial. The elegant sports watch is perfect for this vintage car collector and creative maverick’s active lifestyle.

We can’t believe we discovered @watch_mnl just now when it’s been alive since April of last year—most likely born out of someone’s desire to become productive while adjusting to quarantine life. Someone who’s really into watches and knows a thing or two about people obsessed with the lifestyles of the high and mighty.
