The ramen place that started a craze in Manila is back—but you can only order meal kits for now

The mother and son restaurateurs Margarita and Amado Fores just partnered with Ukokkei’s Tamura-san to bring back the noodles that made Manila ramen-crazy

Remember Ukokkei Ramen Ron, that Pasay Road joint that started the ramen craze in Manila about ten years ago? Well, it’s now officially just Ramen Ron, revived for the new decade by Cibo’s Margarita Fores and a mano’s Amado Fores.

The mother-and-son team also appears to have partnered with the famous Chef Tamura-san for the venture. In a photo, the three are seen happily holding chopsticks and ramen bowls, about to partake of the famous noodles that made ramen fans of many Manileños.

In Margarita’s Instagram post Sunday, she seemed particularly excited about working with the Japanese. She even brought up an Ukokkei memory. “He never used to smile and I got thrown out once because I insisted on bringing my Diet Coke into the restaurant which he did not allow!” wrote 2016’s Asia’s Best Female Chef.

The restaurant is finally open for orders, although some of us might have to wait awhile. “We hope for your understanding as we have limited ramen kits during our soft launch but we will do our best to accommodate everyone as best we can,” says the restaurant’s message on its Facebook page.

The Ramen Ron menu consists of the Ukkokei Miso Chashu Ramen Kit (P480), the Ukokkei Shoyu Chashu Ramen Kit (P480), the Tantanmen Ramen Kit (P480), and the Hiyashi Goma Ramen Kit (P470). Frozen Gyoza are also available for P180 (5 pieces). Each ramen kit is good for 1 person and best consumed within the day of purchase, although it be kept chilled for a couple of days.

Author of several food books, Angelo Comsti, wrote on his Facebook page: “Enjoyed the Tantanmen thoroughly with just the right amount of spice and soft noodles (my pref) since I followed the instructions to a T. Had the cold sesame hiyashi goma ramen too and enjoyed it even on a rainy night.” Comsti also said that because of the health crisis, the meal kits will have to do for now. “Hopefully, when the pandemic eases up, a dine in space soon. Whatever the case, just happy chef’s food is back.” We are quite happy, too!
