This world-famous coffee brand is challenging people to be their own home barista

Nespresso launches its #BeYourOwnBarista campaign to encourage coffee lovers that it’s easy to make a quality cup at home.

When the pandemic hit, big coffee chains and small coffee shops alike had to close down (at least during the enhanced community quarantine), and coffee lovers had to forego their daily Americano or latté habit. And with people now spending most of their time at home, that means having to up their home brewing game.

While coffee shops are trying to figure out how to get people to continue ordering their drinks, for global brand Nespresso, the pandemic presented a different challenge altogether, as well as a possible opportunity to convert stay-at-homers into becoming their own at-home baristas.

To do just that, Nespresso recently held its first ever At-Home Virtual Café event which aims to encourage coffee lovers to start making their own coffee concoctions at home using, of course, Nespresso’s exclusive line of machines and over 29 different coffees from around the world. The event also was an opportunity to spread the word about special promotions on Nespresso machines and coffee capsules happening this August 28 to 30, 2020.

With members of the press and Nespresso Club members in attendance, the virtual event was hosted by Chico Garcia along with entrepreneur Nico Bolzico, co-founder of Sunnies Studios, Bea Soriano-Dee, and private dining chef and restaurateur, Happy Ongpauco-Tiu. Each of them shared how coffee makes them feel, and how they’re able to create those special moments at home.

As the exclusive distributor of Nespresso in the Philippines, Novateur Coffee Concepts Inc. has made inroads into the premium coffee market with its flagship boutique in Power Plant Rockwell, as well as its satellite kiosks around the metropolis. However, with the onset of the pandemic, chairman and managing director Patrick Pesengco revealed that business has dropped, with his customers no longer willing to go to the malls to purchase their regular supply of coffee capsules. One big advantage, however, is that Novateur already set up its local e-commerce website,, even before the pandemic. Pesengco admits, though, that they had to ramp up their back-end logistics to be able to handle all their sales shifting online virtually overnight.

While getting their online service up to speed, Novateur is indeed poised to entice stay-at-homers to explore the Nespresso lifestyle at home. During the virtual launch, Pesengco elaborated on this approach, “Nespresso aims to delight our customers by providing premium coffee experiences and a drop of extraordinary every day, like today. This is what the Nespresso lifestyle is all about—sharing special, authentic moments every day.”

That “Nespresso lifestyle” is predicated on a home coffee experience that can compare or even surpass that of your favorite coffee shop. There’s no need to invest in a manual espresso machine or learn fancy barista techniques, and it comes at a lower cost per cup than what you would purchase at a coffee shop. On the Nespresso website, coffee capsules currently range in price from P32 to P40 per capsule, still well below the price of an espresso-based drink at a café.

During the launch, each of the featured at-home baristas took turns showing how easy it is to use the Nespresso system to make their preferred coffee concoctions at a touch of a button. For Bolzico, it’s a cup of frothy cappuccino, which he enjoys while looking after his infant daughter Thylane. For Soriano-Dee, it’s the calm of sitting down in a quiet place with a macchiato on hand and a book to read. For Ongpauco-Tiu who is always on the go, an Americano is the energy boost she needs throughout the day, preferably sweetened with sugar and whipped cream.

Using her Pixie machine, Happy Ongpauco-Tiu made an Americano with a combo of Vanilla Éclair and Caramel Creme Brulee capsules, then added sugar, chocolate powder, and whipped cream.

Melissa Roque-Valdez, marketing head of Novateur Coffee Concepts, Inc., shared the inspiration behind the brand “to enable anyone to create the perfect cup of coffee at home conveniently and consistently.” To make this possible, Nespresso offers a wide variety of smart and stylish machines, as well as hand-selected coffees, packaged in recyclable capsules, sourced from the finest 1 to 2% of the world’s coffee beans, and with varying taste profiles and intensity. To minimize the waste caused by these single-use capsules, Novateur has also implemented a recycling program that picks up customers’ used capsules.

To make it easier for coffee lovers to adopt the Nespresso lifestyle, Novateur is launching its 3-Day Ultimate Weekend from August 28 to 30, 2020. Customers purchasing coffee machines can avail of 0% installment up to 6 months via credit card.
