Sunday, May 9 is Mother’s Day. Do you know where you’re buying this weekend’s cake for the most important woman in your life—the one who gave birth to you, sent you to school, tolerated your drummer phase and financed your sneaker collection?
She will expect a cake. She won’t say it but in her mind she’s thinking: it’s the least you could do. So don’t miss out on showing her just how much you love her, and just how much more appreciative you are now of her sacrifices than that pimply, sweaty drummer boy who effed up her afternoon naps.
Here are 10 of the best cakes in town picked with her in mind. We have no doubt you will like them too.
1) Flour Pot Manila’s Summer Orange Cake
This limited edition “boucake” is made of alternating light layers of Valencia orange flavored chiffon and Moroccan orange blossom buttercream, studded with bits and pieces of walnuts and candied orange peels and is topped with fresh flowers, making it a cake and a flower bouquet in one. A good alternative for those looking for something extra special and for those undecided whether to give mom flowers or cake too.
Contact Flour Pot Manila @flourpotmanila at 0916-493.7488 on or before May 7 to secure a slot for Mother’s Day.
2) Workshop by Le Petit Souffle’s Mango Shortcake
This fresh and light mango cake from Workshop is made with layers of vanilla chiffon, custard, mango compote, and a white chocolate chantilly. It is now available by pre-orders via www.thegridfoodmarket.com or 0917-7030729.
3) Chef Chele’s Kitchen Burnt Basque Cheesecake
Chef Chele’s take on the now very popular Burnt Basque Cheesecake is considered by many as one of the best in town. But as a special treat on Mother’s Day, Chef Chele and his wife Teri are bringing back one of their popular limited edition flavors, the “Truffle Burnt Basque Cheesecake,” for one day only —Sunday, May 9, Mother’s Day.
Visit @chefcheleskitchen on IG to access its order form on or before May. 7. Those who prefer the classic can order one for pick-up on another date of their choice.
4) Marts Kitchen’s Ube Tres leches
One of my favorite pandemic finds is the Ube tres leches of Marts Kitchen. Ube sponge cake soaked in ube milk, topped with a layer of fresh ube halaya, whipped cream, and ube halaya shavings. It’s like eating a really good ube ice cream in tres leches cake form. A refrigerator cake that is best eaten chilled and consumed within three days of delivery date.
Visit @marts.kitchen on IG or text 0917-570.1996 to order ASAP. Not into ube? Marts Kitchen’s Mixed berries tres leches is also worth a try.
5) Nono’s Banana Cream Pie
Nono’s light yet decadent take on the Banana Cream Pie is made with fresh whipped cream, fresh bananas and caramel on top of a cashew nut crust that’s freshly made in store. Visit nonosph (Facebook) and @nonosph on IG to order.
6) Casa Plana by Secret Passion
This luscious homemade apple crumble pie from Casa Plana is only available by pre-order. Those who are lucky to get a slot will be treated to a pie with a firm, buttery crust filled with cinnamon spiced and caramel sweetened chunks of apples topped with a salty sweet crumble. Best served warm and with a scoop of ice cream (a la mode), or whatever suits your fancy.
Visit @casaplanabysp on IG or text 0917-7005659 to order.
7) Marlene Monfort Pastries’ Red Velvet Cake
A light and well-balanced (not overly rich and not too sweet) take on a classic red velvet made extra special thanks to Marlene’s piping skills. It’s going to be easy to finish one of these, as there is no powdery, chalky aftertaste on the cream cheese frosting, nor is there bitterness on the cake base (which is technically a tinted red devil’s food cake) that I tend to taste in other commercially available red velvets. I also suspect that Pastry Chef Marlene Monfort uses real vanilla bean to flavor her frosting as I see some fine black spots on it. A must-try for fellow red velvet lovers.
Text 0917-7020005 to order. Also available in cupcake form.
8) The Tiramisu Bar’s Roasted Hazelnut Tiramisu
A must try for fellow hazelnut lovers. Is this Ferrero Rocher in tiramisu form?! Best eaten cold (chilled in ref, not room temp). It’s definitely one of the best cakes conceptualized during the pandemic.
Visit @thetiramisubar on IG to preorder.
9) Purple Yam Malate’s Classic Buko Pie with Ube Halaya
A very flaky, thin crusted 6-inch pie fwith coconut filling in two stages—one chewy, the other soft and with a thin but substantial layer of ube halaya (purple yam jam) at the bottom. Two kinds of ube were used: A fragrant variety called “Sapiro”, and another variety aptly called “Deep Purple” due to its vibrant purple hue, producing a well-balanced buko ube filling that has just the right hint of sweetness. Baked fresh on delivery date.
DM @purpleyammalate to order on IG & FB or text 0917 870 5760. Visit www.purpleyamph.com for more info.
10) Wildflour Manila’s Strawberry Cream Cronut Cake
New at Wildflour and made in time for Mother’s Day is this cronut lover’s dream cake filled and crowned with fresh whipped strawberry cream, topped with sliced fresh strawberries for an extra decadent treat.
