Actress Andi Eigenmann’s engagement to surfer Philmar Alipayo is possibly the most modest and fuss-free of celebrity engagements we’ve seen in years—no professional photo and video coverage, no fairy tale movie backdrop, no designer outfits. And yet it’s an event that we think can squeeze out a teardrop or two from the most jaded bachelor still keeping his distance from making a lifetime commitment.
“I never thought about how my engagement would go because quite honestly, I didn’t think I’d have one,” Andi wrote on the caption of a recent Instagram photo where she is showing her engagement ring. “It would’ve been ok regardless, but it did happen. And it happened the way I wanted it and so much more. Nothing grand. Unprompted, simple and oh so sincere. That’s us. That’s him. That is how I want the rest of my life to be. I am over the moon, so stoked to be spending it with you my mahal.”
The couple broke the big news on the second part of their Anilao, Batangas family getaway video posted on their YouTube Channel, Happy Islanders. Just a week prior, the couple posted their gender reveal video—Andi and Philmar are having a baby boy next year.
At first, the video just seemed like any of their fun family beach adventures in Siargao. Philmar learned freediving, eldest daughter Ellie had a bubble maker class, while Andi and youngest daughter Lilo enjoyed wading in the water. The family also did a mini hike at Mt. Gulugod Baboy. It was good vibes all around seeing them bask in the joy of togetherness.
But before the video ended, Philmar was seen seated on a chair at the terrace of their unit. He had obviously hidden a camera to record what was about to happen. Unfortunately, the video fogged up and the audio was barely audible because of the rain. It was only the subtitles that allowed viewers to follow what was going on.
To make Andi step out of their room, Philmar texted her, “Mahal, I’m hungry na.” Andi right away went out of the room to join him, and sat on his lap. As per Andi, Philmar started whispering nice things to her about their life together and their growing family. “He doesn’t normally talk about his feelings a lot so I was surprised.”
Philmar then told her that he had been wanting to spend time with her. “Hindi mo na nga ako pinapansin e. Palaging si Lilo lang,” she said, in that naglalambing kind of way. Deep inside, however, Andi can’t stop laughing because she didn’t know how to express her kilig. Philmar, she knows, is a man of few words.
He then started telling her how much he wants and hopes to spend this life with her forever, as Andi’s soft giggles continue to be heard. After a few moments, he finally popped the question, “Gikan sa tibook nako kinasing-kasing, hangjoon ko kaw na magpakasan ta. (Translation: “From my whole heart, I am asking you if you will marry me.”) Philmar was still in tears.
He then gestured to Andi to get up. “I honestly thought his leg just died from me sitting on it for so long,” the video subtitle read. Philmar then pulled something out of his pocket. “I started laughing and crying at the same time even more. Yung pang best actress nominee na. I didn’t know what to say or do. So I took the ring and hugged him. Haha.”
Philmar said, “Jadto ho, Nagvideo ako. Omay imo laong? (Translation: “Look there oh, I’m taking a video, what will you say?”) Andi, of course, said yes. It was a cute moment when they were asking each other whether Philmar should put the engagement ring on Andi’s left or right finger. As the camera lens finally cleared up, the couple are seen seated on the floor, facing each other, relishing the moment. The next shot showed their hands clasped together showing the ring and the wave tattoo that seemed to bind their wrists. “So stoked to be riding the waves of life with you forever,” their video subtitle read.
Island life with Philmar
It was in August 2018 when Andi went public about her relationship with the champion surfer from Siargao. “He’s been a friend for about a year now,” she told Cosmo about Philmar in 2018. “It’s a new relationship, so we’re taking things really, really slow. But because we were already friends, the foundation is there. There’s no pressure. It’s really just built around surfing and the island life…eating fish.”
But the following year, Andi showed a clear sign that they’re in it for the long haul as she announced a baby on the way. She also mentioned she and her eldest daughter Ellie are already based in the island.
Philmar, now 27, is actually kind of a celebrity in his own right. He emerged as the grand winner in the 19th Siargao National Surfing Cup in 2017 and currently ranks 5th on the men's short board division of the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PSCT), the country’s first-ever and only professional surfing tournament.
An interview with PEP reveals that Philmar started surfing at age 10 and was trained by his Uncle Yok-Yok, also a top Filipino surfer during his time. Philmar is the eldest in a brood of three. His younger brother, PJ Alipayo, is also a talented surfer. The article also mentioned that Philmar co-owns a lodging house with Andi in Baler, Aurora, and teaches surfing during his freetime.
Andi and Philmar may seem like an unlikely couple because of their roots, but as her interview with PEP reveals, the reason she fell in love with Philmar was because he made her and her daughter Ellie feel important, and he allowed her to enjoy a simple but carefree life. Their family videos only show why Philmar is perfect for Andi—he is fun to be with and cares deeply for her daughters.
As Andi puts it, “The love we were promised in fairytales was never something for us to find. It has always been something for us to create.”
