Model-turned-actress Megan Young made global headlines in 2013 when she became the first Filipina to win the Miss World title in the pageant’s 63-year history. But did you know the beauty queen is also a serious gamer?
“Gaming really gives me time to relax,” says the 30-year old actress and endorser. “When I'm feeling stressed or burnt out, I turn to gaming because I feel like I'm in my own world.”
In truth, Young was a gamer first before the world of pageants came calling. “I started gaming when I was pretty young. My parents introduced me to educational games, then, eventually, it developed into a love for recreational games.”
Young actually began playing with the classic titles such as Mario Party and Pokémon Snap on her Nintendo N64 in the late ’90s.
She has been playing a lot more video games since the lockdown, with her husband and fellow gamer Mikael Daez. Some people might think the only reason she’s playing is because of her husband but Megan will be the first to say, uhm, no, not really.
“It’s actually surprising because at some point in our relationship, we both realized that we’re both into video games and that we’ve actually played these games even before we met each other,” she says. “I remember when we first heard about Ragnarok coming to mobile, I was like ‘I loved this game in high school!’ and Mikael could not believe it because it was also a game he played back then.”
Recently, Young has been spending more time playing Animal Crossing on her Nintendo Switch. But don’t let all this gaming talk fool you into thinking it’s all the lady ever does. The way she says it, her gaming time is a treat she allows herself. “Nowadays, because of workload, I really try to devote an hour or two a day. Usually I'll play games before work starts and then right before I go to bed.”
We asked Megan to name her top 5 video games in the last few months, and she gamely whipped up a list.
1. Genshin Impact
2. Animal Crossing
3. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (started playing after watching the series on Netflix!)
4. Wild Rift
5. Fall Out Shelter Online
Megan is one of the latest endorsers of Foodpanda. She is the third celebrity gamer the delivery service had tapped to represent the brand. The actress says that even while immersed in a game, she finds the time to order food, and a recent favorite order from foodpanda has been steak burrito with cheese. “We’d always order it in the middle of a gaming session,” she says.
