No win, no Hermès? Viral post says memes on Jinkee Pacquiao not getting a new bag must stop

Facebook user Cookie Belmonte thinks these jokes and memes are misogynistic

Manny Pacquiao lost his Vegas fight Sunday against Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugas and still received congratulatory messages from mainstream media and the Internet. The Senator’s wife Jinkee Pacquiao wasn’t in the ring with Manny during the 12-round bout but got a beating online.

A joke/meme that made the rounds of social media sites last weekend was about how Mrs. Pacquiao was saddened by her husband’s defeat because she won’t be getting a new designer bag from her hubby. “Wala munang Hermès,” said one post, naming the popular luxury brand that makes some of Jinkee’s prized bags. “BREAKING! EXCLUSIVE! JUST IN!” went another post, “JINKEE PACQUIAO, NATAGPUANG UMIIYAK SA LOOB NG MALL DAHIL WALANG BAGONG BAG!”

Nothing was heard from the Senatorial spouse about the jokes—but one Cookie Belmonte took to Facebook to say, Wait, hang on, enough with this crap! Cookie, a virtual assistant for US-based real estate investors, posted a photograph of Manny and Jinkee during their wedding in 1999 to bring up an important detail people seem to have been missing.

“Woke up to several memes that say Jinkee does not get a new bag because Manny lost his most recent fight, basically implying Jinkee is materialistic,” Cookie began. “Pangit ng joke ninyo.”

And then while referring to the attached wedding photo, they (Cookie prefers the pronouns they/them) wrote: “Reminder lang who was there for Manny even before he was someone or had anything.”

Cookie found the jokes sexist. “Komo si Manny lang ang nakikita nating nakikipagsuntukan sa ring, idi-disregard na natin contribution ni Jinkee sa success nilang dalawa.”

The post has been shared more than 60,000 times as of this writing, earned 105,000 likes and 6,800 comments. There are those who say Manny’s money is Jinkee’s money, too, and Jinkee can do whatever she wants with it. It’s not like she doesn’t run a household and makes sure the kids are taken care of and raised well.

There are those who say they appreciate Jinkee, “the woman behind Manny’s success.” And then there are those who say memes are memes, why make a big deal out of it?

It’s no secret Mrs. Pacquiao loves her designer bags. The popular Facebook user and YouTube vlogger Nelson Adrian has put together a video dedicated to her Hermès collection alone. In this Metro.Style video, Mrs. Pacquiao shares that she doesn’t always tell the Senator about her bag purchases. “Minsan hindi niya alam yung mga price ng bag ko,” Jinkee adds, smiling. “Minsan nalalaman niya na lang sa iba. ‘Ay mahal pala ‘yan, meron din ganyan si Jinkee ha!’”

It’s also no secret that, as wife to one of the world’s greatest boxers, she’s had to go through tough times, like worrying about her husband’s safety at each and every fight. And of course you remember this particularly challenging time in her married life.

“I'm sure she had her own battles and won them,” Cookie said on her now viral Facebook post. “So, isip na lang kayo ng ibang joke. 'Yung hindi misogynistic.”
