“I go on duty at the hospital four to five times a week, 12-hour shifts each time,” shares Dr. Janelle Custodio-Valdez, an emergency physician who handles COVID-19 cases at St. Luke’s Bonifacio Global City and at Asian Hospital. “A typical day for me is to wake up at 5:30am as my shift starts at 7am. I take a shower, dress up, and kiss the kids goodbye. I find that it is easiest for me to leave when the kids are still asleep so they don’t cling to me or cry.”

Meanwhile, Janine Duran Llamzon, a nurse commander at the St. Joseph’s Health Emergency Service line in New Jersey, admits that treating COVID-19 patients does take its toll on their physical and emotional health. “But somehow, at the end of the day, we still make it through. We still make a decision that we’re coming back tomorrow stronger than ever, braver, with dedication and passion for what we do, she says”

Valdez and Llamzon are only two of the millions of frontliner-moms who are tirelessly working in these trying times.
