Notable finds at the casa—from ivory medicine dolls to an artist’s sketchbook

At the recent preview of Casa de Memoria’s upcoming auction, here are 10 things that caught our eye

Those on the lookout for rare and unique finds to spruce up their homes, to give away as gifts, or add to collections will find a lot to train their eyes on at Casa de Memoria’s first auction for the year.

Two hundred and 22 lots will be up for bids April 30–carpets and cabinets, paintings and sculptures, and curios from across the world, mostly from Europe and Asia, some of them from as far back as the 1600s.

The selection was curated by Miguel Rosales, art consultant and known curator of select private collections. Because of this, Casa de Memoria’s Camille Lhuillier-Albani is confident art aficionados, collectors and those filling up their well-appointed houses will find remarkable pieces to take home.

32 cm length

Physical contact between male doctors and female patients was at one time considered taboo in China. Hence, the use of a medicine doll, like this 20th century carved nude female in ivory. It’s where female patients simply point out the body parts where they feel ill.

Dubbed as the “Rubrik’s cube of the ancient world,” ball puzzles are concentric spheres intricately carved from a single solid ivory piece using specialized tools. This particular set, consisting of two differently sized ivory puzzle balls with a stand, is set to date back to early 20th century China.

Contains 66 drawings in ink, aquarelle, and gouche by the celebrated Iloilo-born artist Tabuena (three are signed). The guy is known for traditional Filipino themes, hence the book contains his drawings of carabaos, traditional boats, and tropical landscapes.

A mahogany dressing table with desk and front drawer that dates back to mid-19th century. The piece resembles a similar dresser in Spain’s Museo del Romanticismo, which combines the style of Maria Cristina de Borbon (1833-1843) with the Fernandino aesthetic.

This image of the infant Jesus, crafted in the Philippines between the 18th to 19th centuries, features a face and hands carved in ivory, eyes made of glass, and a wig of abaca. Its wooden body dons a thin brass sheet vestido and stands on brass, Baroque style.

A fancy, stylish way to stash your cigars is by using this 1940s musical thingamajig from Switzerland. It has six doors (with cigar holders behind) that automatically opens and closes when activated. It’s decorated with various birds, painted in enamel on cobalt blue glass body, mounted on metal.
