Fans of midcentury modern design looking to add a few more pieces to their collection must check out Day 2 of this weekend’s Leon Exchange Online Auction. Instagram’s popular Midcentury Manila is auctioning off 47 pieces from its vault which includes a mix of highly collectible chairs, tables and lighting fixtures.
Some of the iconic vintage pieces that caught our eye are Charles and Ray Eames’ RAR or Rocking Armchair Rod with original Alexander Girard upholstery for Herman Miller, Eero Saarinen’s Womb Chair in tangerine, a Knoll Bird Chair, and Marc Newson’s Embryo chair for Idee and Cappellini.
Others we wouldn’t mind welcoming to our homes include a pink Keith Haring Standing Man Child’s Chair by Vilac, a cantilevered Lou Hodges Lounger for California Designs, and a sling-mounted Odd Knutsen Low-Back Luna Lounger for Mobler of Norway.
Midcentury modern furniture, which peaked from the 1940s to the 1960s, combine traditional with nontraditional materials such as metal, glass, vinyl, Plexiglas, and Lucite, producing eye-catching masterpieces that meld a crisp aesthetic with sturdy functionality.
Coined in 1984 by writer and art historian Cara Greenberg, midcentury modern (or MCM to those who don't have the time) is whatis popularly described as “furniture candy” and is usually a fitting and fully functional highlight, central piece, or conversation piece in a tastemaker’s home.
The Leòn Exchange Online Auction 18 is happening this Saturday and Sunday, January 23 and 24, starting at 11 AM. Previews of these lots will be at Leòn Gallery Warehouse 14, La Fuerza Compound, Don Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City.
The auction is guest-curated by medical practitioner and design consultant Dr. Joel Malixi, co-administrator of the highly regarded Facebook page Philippine Heritage Furniture.
