The sound of crwn—music we can dance to while we wait to dance together

Made during quarantine, the two tracks show crwn’s ability to create music from the mundane.

When was the last time you danced?

2020 sounds less like the year we’re in and more the number of days we’ve felt trapped. The pandemic and subsequent quarantines have turned our worries into our norms. Work, life, and everything else have become indistinguishable from each other. Our homes have become our banal sanctuaries as well as the last place we want to be. With still a long way before we get to some semblance of normalcy, bright spots have become more welcome and appreciated.

“Moment To Moment”, crwn’s first release since 2019’s Labryinth EP is one such bright spot. Along with its companion track, “From Time To Time”, both feature no lyrics but faint hums that serve as echoes of a time we all felt free. “This project was the first time I felt compelled to create again, to fulfill a need to create something new,” says crwn.

Crwn (stylized as crwn) is the electronic music project of Manila-based producer, songwriter, and beat-maker King Puentespina.

In the press release, the artist shares that these latest recordings are his reflections on “music’s place, as well as, its absence.” It’s hard then not to recognize what’s missing. Harder still not to imagine listening to “Moment to Moment'' someplace else. Someplace other than here. Surrounded by friends and strangers alike. It’s that absence, just like the memory of it, that haunts the whole track. A sonic apparition of something we’ve been longing for.

“Being in quarantine is like being stuck in a time loop; every moment is the same and I just wanted something that can be hopeful and positive even through a turbulent and uncertain time,” crwn offers. The beauty of both tracks is their ability to dance around the monotony and find music in the mundane. It’s a testament to crwn’s ability to acknowledge what’s missing and create from there.

“Being in quarantine is like being stuck in a time loop;" says crwn.

To the uninitiated, crwn is the electronic music project of Manila-based producer, songwriter, and beat-maker King Puentespina. His sound evoke the structures and sensibilities of dance and house music, as well as funk, hip-hop, and neo soul. He has graced major music festivals in the country including Wonderfruit, Malasimbo, and Wanderland.

With all the dread 2020 has given us, we could all use a break—or at the very least a reason to dance. Thankfully, crwn’s latest release is a good enough reason to do so. We may be playing it in solitude at the moment but in time we’ll all gather to dance to it together.
