The works of seasoned names and young, contemporary artists on the rise performed impressively at the Leon Gallery x ArtPH’s Art Aid: The ArtPH Online Art Auction held December 12.
Emmanuel Garibay set a world record for his works, with his “Emmaus” selling for Php 3 million. The piece is a testament not just to the artist’s craftsmanship, but also in translating his grasp of the human condition into a work on canvas.
Contemporary art stars such as Mark Justiniani, Elmer Borlongan, and Jose John Santos III also soared high in the online sale. Venice Biennale 2019 representative and social realist Justiniani’s “Tungkod“ was sold for Php 1.7 million; Borlongan’s evocative “Tranquility” for Php 550,000; and Santos III’s “Handle with Care” for Php 400,000.
Respected collectors also donated artworks for the said online auction for a cause. Ang Kiukok’s pen and ink “Mother and Child”, featuring the artist’s signature Cubist style, sold for Php 323,000. This piece was donated by premiere collector Paulino and Hetty Que.
Young artists also broke ground in the online event. Exciting new artist Luke Alarcon’s “Rose Colored Boy” sold for Php 80,000. Cedric dela Paz, another brilliant artist, was well-represented by his “Karera” which went for Php 150,000.
The initiative was headed by the couple Julius and Christine Babao, and their friends Lori Juvida, and Chinkee Tan. Proceeds of the sale will be donated to the construction of a permanent evacuation center in Alcala, Cagayan, and will serve as support for orphaned babies at the Cribs Foundation. Leon Gallery waived all buyer’s premium for the sale, this being an auction for charity.
