What caught her eye: Fe Rodriguez’s faves from Leon Gallery’s Spectacular Mid Year Auction

We asked the collector what she thinks will pique the interest of her fellow art enthusiasts. Here are her top five.
ANCX | Jun 10 2020

Fe Rodriguez is much admired for her entrepreneurial skills as she is for her devotion to collecting art. She is the founder of Burger Machine, the pioneering model of today’s fast food chains. Rodriguez has devoted the same energy through the decades to assembling an exquisite collection of art and antiques.

Hence, it is but natural we include her in a panel of tastemakers whose guidance could help interested buyers in making decisions for the upcoming Leon Gallery Spectacular Mid Year Auction, the one happening this June 20.

León Gallery specializes in museum-quality and historically important Philippine Art. Since its first auction in 2013, it has continued to establish record prices for Filipino Masters as well as modern and contemporary artists.

ANCX does a first by collaborating with top auction house Leon Gallery for this much anticipated event. We asked a select group of art enthusiasts to pick out their favorites from a treasure trove of 125 auction pieces.

Here are Fe’s choices:

Romeo Tabuena

The distinctive Tabuena style and theme with the Filipino flag as backdrop appeals to me as it is an affirmation of the artist’s nationalism despite living in Mexico.

Anita Magsaysay-Ho

This typical rural scene, Anita style, with father and son (rather unusual since her subjects are mostly women) would definitely be in my wish list.

Mother and Child by Onib Olmedo

I am drawn to Onib’s distorted and haunting subjects. I like that this piece is not too grotesque.

Still Life (Window Series) by Ang Kuikok

This is a testament to Ang’s mastery of still life, the seamless blend of composition, color and texture.

Women Waiting by Benedicto Cabrera

A beautiful rendition in pencil and ink of one of Bencab’s favourite subjects, Filipina women in traditional costume with so much attention to the details. I also find the composition outstanding.
