Local and international pro cyclists, as well as amateurs of all ages, came together on May 24 to 26 at Harbor Point, Subic for the second leg of PRURide PH 2019.
Hosted by British life insurer Pru Life UK, the cycling event showcased a UCI 2.2 Stage Race where various teams from all over the world competed for UCI points in three stages, as well as Masters Race, Gran Fondo with 30, 60, and 100 kilometer rides, and a virtual race that lets cyclists compete in a digital cycling game.
Filipino cyclist Marcelo Felipe of 7-Eleven Cliqq Air21 Team—who bagged the Best Filipino Rider and King of the Mountain titles at the event—was named PRURide PH’s champion (7:57:15), followed by South African cyclist Brendon Davids of Oliver’s Real Food Team (7:58:02) and New Zealander cyclist Michael Vink of St. George Team (8:01:27).
PRU Life UK’s Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Allan Tumbaga said he is grateful for the success of this year’s PRURide.
"It has gotten bigger and more prestigious in terms of the number of participants, recognition, and category. Last year, we were UCI Class B, now we’re UCI category 2.2 with 25 teams—17 of which are international or continental and they came from the likes of Australia, Hong Kong, and South Korea," he said.
Apart from the thrilling races that took place in the affair, attendees also enjoyed Zumba sessions, food booths, special bike rides, a concert with OPM bands Gracenote and Callalily, and the Strider Cup that let kids appreciate the sport at an early point in their lives.
"We decided to do something quite different especially for the little ones. To really formalize that we are encouraging the use of bikes, we partnered with Strider Cup," shared Tumbaga. "The Strider Cup really made quite a difference and I was amazed. It was so fun to see little kids racing to the finish line on their non-pedal bikes, with their parents cheering them on."
The second leg of PRURide PH 2019 was graced with the presence of PRURide PH ambassadors Gretchen Ho, Kim Atienza, and Zoren Legaspi, who likewise took part in its kick-off with the Criterium races held at Filinvest, Alabang last April 7.
