Ever since the microwave oven was invented, it has been considered a staple inside the kitchen.

Most homes undoubtedly have one, and it is probably one of the hardest working appliances.

However, odds are it is often used simply for reheating leftovers, defrosting frozen food, or preparing a quick meal.

Here are unexpected non-food related things one can do using a microwave oven, proving this appliance's versatility:

1. Disinfect kitchen sponges

Kitchen sponges are teeming with bacteria that can make one sick. One of the easiest ways to disinfect a sponge is to saturate it with water and put it in the microwave for 2 minutes at high power. Because the sponge can get very hot, give it a few minutes to cool down or use tongs to pick it up. A caveat: never microwave a sponge that contains metal.

2. Clean socks in a jiffy

For those times when one needs a clean pair of socks, yet there are not enough clothes to run a full load in the washer, here's an alternative.

Soak the dirty socks in a large bowl of soapy water and put it in the microwave on high for 10 minutes. It will be clean and disinfected just like that.

It may seem unhygienic to put dirty clothes inside your microwave oven but killing germs is one thing that microwaves are good at.

3. Test microwave-safe containers

To find out if a food container is safe to use in the microwave oven, get a microwave-safe mug and fill it with cold water. Place the mug in the middle of the container to be tested. Heat on high power for one minute.

If the water becomes hot and the container remains cold, then it is safe; but if the container becomes hot, then it is not microwave-safe.

Knowing how to maximize the microwave oven's potential can truly save a lot of precious time and provide so much convenience, which is why more and more people are choosing to have one inside their kitchen.
