Everyone must make an effort to live a sustainable life.

But what does it really mean to live sustainably?

According to research, sustainability is understanding that people's actions are all connected. Buying a smartphone will affect someone's life on the other side of the planet, not throwing away your trash properly may lead to a catastrophe for someone else, and planting a tree will impact the future generations to come. It is about understanding that our every action result in a reaction that may affect us or someone else.

Sustainability means that we must live today in a way that the future generations can thrive and also have their life.

However, we also need to understand how the planet works to know what measures we need to take to help future generations and even the present one.

People's basic needs most often come from the environment, we need trees for shelter and basic materials, we catch fish and other animals in the wild for food, among others. These things can replenish on their own, however, due to excessive human consumption, nature cannot keep up with people's demands.

There must be an equilibrium in the supply and demand, but the reality is, people are demanding more than nature's replacement rate. People tend to excessively consume and we make it worse by air and water pollution - polluting the environment with plastic and participating in actions that create climate change. According to an analysis by the World Wildlife Fund, an average person could be ingesting approximately 5 grams of plastic per week. Plastic pollution is affecting the environment.

Problems impacting nature are also affecting us.

People are experiencing more floods than ever, stronger typhoons, extreme weather conditions, water interruptions, higher electric and fuel costs. We cannot put a stop to these problems until we solve the root cause of the problem.

To help reverse the effects of our actions, everyone must intentionally participate in living a sustainable life.

One of the few ways that we can actively participate in living a sustainable life is to ensure that we either replace what we consume or lessen our environmental footprint and consumption.

We can also opt to avoid using plastic or make sure that what we use gets recycled, plant more trees, and to reuse and recycle whenever possible.

"Sa usaping sustainable development, ito ay tumatalakay sa tema ng pag-unlad at pagtugon sa mga pangangailangan ng kasalukuyang henerasyon na hindi makokomprimiso ang pangangailangan ng mga susunod na henerasyon," shares Al Orolfo, Director of DENR Foreign-Assisted and Special Projects Service.
(When it comes to sustainable development, it talks about how we can develop and respond to the needs of the current generation while ensuring that the needs of the future generation will not be compromised.)

This means that sustainable development does not undermine the fact that people in the present generation have needs and that we need to still live and fulfill these needs, however, we must fulfill these needs in such a way that it will not affect the future generation.

SM Prime builds legacy communities based on its four core sustainable pillars: Economy, People, Environment, and Community. It is dedicated to generating value sustainably through its diverse portfolio of companies and business segments: malls, residences, offices, hotels, and convention centers.

SM buildings are designed with sewage treatment plants that recycle water for landscape irrigation, for reuse in water closet flushing and for cleaning the premises. SM also has desalination plants that convert seawater for operational use, therefore reducing the consumption of freshwater in the area.

Rainwater harvesting, a Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure design solution for vulnerable communities and is being eyed as a solution to help address water scarcity, is also one of SM Prime's sustainable efforts.

SM buildings use energy-efficient equipment such as building management systems, sensored devices and LED lights. SM has solar panels installed on their malls' roof decks which provide solar powered energy, an alternative to coal-powered electric energy.

Efficient waste management is also integral to SM's sustainability efforts – with waste composting programs ranging from basic segregation, to systems set to convert solid waste into compost, to programs that gather the efforts of our communities through its Trash to Cash program.
