Russian President Vladimir Putin showed off his toughness once again as he took part in a judo training session in the southern city of Sochi.

A judo black belt holder himself, Putin held a friendly fight with Italian coach Ezio Gamba and other athletes.

The judo session was the latest of many events aimed at showing Putin as physically fit and victorious, part of a long-running Kremlin drive to show voters that he is the right man to run the country.

The judo practice was followed by a meeting with sports officials where the Italian coach, a 1980 Olympic champion, was granted Russian citizenship.

Last September, Putin also granted Russian citizenship to US boxing legend Roy Jones Jr.
