MANILA, Philippines – The International Boxing Association junked the protest filed by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) over the controversial defeat of Mark Anthony Barriga to Kazakhstan’s Bizhan Zhakypov.

Zhakypov squeezed out a 17-16 win over barriga in a rought fight marred by occasional clinching and wrestling.

ABAP questioned the head butt warnings by the referee, which led to two additional points for Barriga’s opponent.

Without the two-point deduction, Barriga would have won the match and moved on to the quarterfinals.

But AIBA found the protest “too subjective to review.”

Barriga, the lone Filipino boxer in the Olympics, was believed to be the country’s strongest hope for a medal in the London Games. -- Dateline Philippines, ANC, August 5, 2012.
