MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Mark Anthony Barriga made it to the next round of the London Olympics’ amateur boxing tournament after beating his Italian foe in the round of 32.

Barriga outpointed Manuel Cappai, 17-7, in the 49-kg division to enter the round of 16.

The 19-year-old Pinoy, who trained with Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao before the Games, frustrated the taller Italian with his superior timing, excellent handspeed and footwork.

The Filipino boxer, who has since been given the nickname “Little Pacquiao,” will face Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov on Saturday.

Barriga’s parents, who were at ringside to watch their son compete, are hoping for another victory in the next round. Mornings @ ANC, August 1, 2012.
