MANILA, Philippines – Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is thankful for the support of Filipino fans during his team’s remarkable playoff run en route to the 2012 NBA championship.

“Thank you so much for the support, and the support even before we won it (championship). Hopefully, we do gain some new fans now, but the love and response that we got every year for the last three years was incredible,” he said.

Spoelstra, who was born to a Filipino mother, hopes his success as an NBA head coach “opens more doors” for Filipinos.

“Dreams can come true. It doesn’t matter what your skin color is, or where you’re from. You just need the right opportunity and the right group of people to make it happen,” he said.

Spoelstra and the Miami Heat celebrated their championship with a parade and a rally at the American Airlines Arena yesterday.

“Sometimes it takes a lot of sacrifices to make this happen, and we want to thank all the players, and the fans who made this possible,” Spoelstra told the crowd who came to celebrate with the Heat.

“This is your championship, too,” he added. -- Mornings @ ANC, June 27, 2012.
