MANILA, Philippines – Two superb first half goals by red-hot striker Mario Gomez earned Germany a 2-1 victory over a disappointing Netherlands squad in Group B play of the Euro 2012.

Gomez produced a neat turn onto Bastian Schweinsteiger’s through ball and shot a goal in the 24th minute.

Fed by the same player, Gomez also fired in a fierce second goal in the 38th minute.

The Dutch, beaten 1-0 by Denmark in their opener, were poor for long spells, but hit back with a superb 20-meter shot by forward Robin Van Persie in the 73rd minute.

Germany tops the group standings with six points.

Meanwhile, Portugal beat Denmark 3-2 to put themselves right back in the Group B mix and revived the team’s hopes of reaching the quarterfinals.

Silvestre Varela came off the bench to score an 87th minute winner for the thriller. Pepe gave Portugal the lead with a header in the 24th, and Helder Postiga added another in the 37th. Mornings @ ANC, June 14, 2012.
