MANILA, Philippines – Bacolod City’s pride Donnie “Ahas” Nietes retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight crown by outpointing Mexican challenger Felipe Salguero in the main event of Pinoy Pride XIV on Saturday.

Nietes looked flawless as he gave the Mexican a boxing clinic before scores of fight fans at the Resorts World Manila in Pasay City .

He pummeled Salguero several times with a series of right hand punches in the opening rounds, followed by accurate uppercut-right hook combinations midway through the bout.

But the younger Salguero showed resiliency, especially late in the fight when Nietes began to tire out.

The judges scored the fight 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112 all in favor of the reigning Filipino champion.

“Salguero is a good fighter, magaling siya,” said Nietes after the bout. “Malakas at hindi siya basta-basta.”

Nietes now has a record of 30 wins and 1 loss. The visiting Mexican was handed his 3rd career loss in 20 fights.

The opening rounds saw the 30-year-old Ilonggo repeatedly connecting with looping rights to the head of Salguero.

The Mexican tried to engage Nietes in a brawl, but the Filipino got the better of the close quarter battle by sneaking three-punch combos from the inside.

Nietes showed signs of tiring out in the 8th and 9th rounds, but managed to survive Salguero’s relentless attacks by consistently throwing jabs.

He again found his rhythm in the 10th round and managed to hold on to his lead up to the final bell.

Pinoy Pride XIV will be aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday starting at 9:55 a.m.
This will be followed by a replay on Studio 23 at 12:30 p.m.
