The United States remains as the "best insurance policy" of the Philippines despite doubts over new president Donald Trump's policies, an analyst said Thursday.

Political analyst Richard Heydarian said the Duterte administration should reset bilateral relations with the U.S., since Washington is seen as a “much more reliable ally”.

“We need an insurance policy and no matter how problematic U.S. is still our best insurance policy that is why it is incumbent upon this administration to restore the key aspect of our military cooperation with the Americans to status quo ante,” Heydarian said in an interview on “[email protected]

Heydarian said the current U.S. administration is more “aggressive” in terms of military countermeasures amid the Philippines’ dispute with China over the West Philippine Sea.
