President Rodrigo Duterte’s suspension of the peace talks with communist rebels was due to a persistent roadblock in the process - the release of political prisoners.

Historian Manolo Quezon explains, the communists may have overestimated their influence on the President.

"It may be that the communists thought the President needed them more than he needed the army or that he was just posturing when he said freeing too many communists in jail ahead of an actual peace agreement would be a tough sell," Quezon said.
