Some positive things may await the Philippines, with President Rodrigo Duterte vocal about idolizing Russian President Vladimir Putin and keen on pushing closer ties with Moscow.

Richard Heydarian, author of the book "Asia's New Battlefield: US, China and the Struggle for the Western Pacific," told ANC's Headstart that the Philippines should have more diversified relations with other countries.

He pointed said Russia has been the biggest exporter of oil. "I think three years ago, they were even bigger that Saudi Arabia," he said.

"We could have bought oil and gas from this country at discount rates," he said.

"Remember, Russian economy is now in recession, they’re in trouble, they’re desperate for cash and they’re looking for new markets and South East Asia is something they are looking at," he added.

Heydarian also pointed out that another expertise of Russia are its armaments, which he describes as being "first-world quality with third-world price." - ANC, Headstart, 23 November 2016
