MANILA - Rains will persist over large parts of Luzon on Wednesday, with the potential to bring floods and landslides, as tropical depression "Kiko" crossed the country's northern tip, the state weather bureau said.

The Batanes islands, the Ilocos Region and Zambales province are especially vulnerable to floods as the storm moved away from the country on its way to China, PAGASA said in a statement.

Kiko was spotted 100 kilometers northwest of Calayan, Cagayan at 3 a.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 65 kph, PAGASA said.

Kiko is set to leave the Philippine area of responsibility or PAR late Wednesday if it continues moving northwest at 20 kph, PAGASA meteorologist Meno Mendoza said.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience localized thunderstorms, he said.

Another low pressure area or brewing storm is being monitored outside PAR, he said.
