Leyte Governor Dominic Petilla said rescue efforts are currently focused on collapsed structures in Kananga.

On Thursday, eight people were pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building including one fatality, identified as 42-year-old Jerry Mediavilla.

Another person sustained significant injuries and had to undergo surgery.

Authorities say most of those rescued were shopping at a grocery on the building's ground floor.

Rescue operations were suspended before midnight with no signs of anyone else trapped.

“The rescue teams had to make sure last night that no one was left inside and there were no claims of families or friends missing. So the rescue teams called off rescue at 1 a.m.,” Petilla said.

Petilla is calling for a probe into the possibility building standards were compromised.

Meanwhile, Petilla said all roads on the border of Kananga and Ormoc are now passable allowing the entry of heavy equipment for clearing operations.

They have also requested for water tankers in Kananga to address water interruption in the area. - News Now, 7 July 2017
