Senator Leila de Lima should be detained inside an "ordinary jail" if she is arrested for drug trafficking, instead of being given special accommodations, the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption insisted Monday.

Citing the equality clause in the Constitution, VACC founding chairman Dante Jimenez said De Lima must experience what typical drug suspects go through.

"All of us are supposed to be treated equally. I hope the Duterte administration will not give special treatment as accorded to previous na mga pinagsuspetyahan ng plunder at mga heinous crimes. Sana naman sa ordinary jail [si De Lima]," he told radio DZMM.

"Ikumpara mo naman iyun mga ginawa niya sa ginawang mga ordinary drug pusher... Maramdaman nila ano ang kondisyon ng mga kulungan."

(All of us are supposed to be treated equally. I hope the Duterte administration will not give special treatment as accorded to previous officials suspected of plunder and heinous crimes. I hope De Lima will be detained at an ordinary jail. You should compare what she allegedly did to the acts of ordinary drug pushers. She should experience the conditions at jails. )

The VACC is behind one of the 3 drug trafficking cases lodged by the justice department against De Lima on Friday.

A judge will decide whether to issue a warrant for her arrest once her non-bailable case is assigned to a court.

The Philippine National Police has offered the detention center inside Camp Crame to De Lima, promising that she will stay safe there.
