COMPOSTELA VALLEY, Philippines - Compostela Valley Gov. Arturo Uy on Thursday said authorities will look into the cause of the flashfloods that claimed over a hundred lives in the province.
Speaking to reporters, Uy said there are many theories as to what caused the flood.
"Hindi naman risky ito. Poblacion ito e. Matagal na ito, nandiyan yung munisipyo. May mga risk area tayo dun sa bukid. Itong gumuho na sobrang laking volume ng tubig hindi natin inaasahan. May spekulasyon, sabi nila buhawi. May spekulasyon din na doon sa bukid mayroong pan of water na nandoon yung waterfalls, bumigay," he said.
"Two days prior, nag-evacuate na tayo e. Barangay hall sa covered court, duon bumuhos yung tubig. Hindi namin akalain yun," he added.
For his part, Vice-President Jejomar Binay said the devastation is massive and it will take time to rebuild infrastructure and damaged agricultural lands.
He said the government should not allow residents to return to their homes in danger zones.
He said the rebuilding of houses and roofs will be done in relocation sites.
