A Canadian national who killed 2 people in the Cebu City justice hall before he was shot has been a resident of Cebu for 10 years.

ABS-CBN Cebu News senior desk officer Vilma Andales said Canadian John Pope has been staying in the Philippines for 14 years, 10 of which were spent in Guadalupe, Cebu.

His affidavit said he was 66 and single. Neighbors said Pope had several live-in partners but no permanent partner.

Andales said Pope has been facing several criminal complaints for grave threat, malicious mischief and illegal possession of firearms. She said neighbors complained Pope used to brandish his gun and bring it outside his P13-million condo unit.

Andales confirmed Pope once went to ABS-CBN Cebu because he wanted to report alleged anomalies committed by the police in the cases filed against him.

"The way he approached us was kind of arrogant and demanding, He wanted us immediately to go there and get the police and he wanted the report coming from us to be favorable to his side," she said.

"We told him we will follow up with the police but not immediately. We also wanted to get the side of the people complaining. He was so demanding. One time, he said we should air this report immediately after his talk."

Andales said there are conflicting reports on whether Pope died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he was killed by responding police. The Canadian bore gunshot wounds to the left temple, arms and thighs.

She also said Pope was able to bring his gun to the justice hall by hiding it in a newspaper tucked under his arm.
