MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) - Unidentified armed men strafed the house of Inquirer columnist and UP professor Randy David in Quezon City on Tuesday night.

No one was injured in the shooting. Randy and his granddaughter Julia were inside the house, located along Gomburza Street in UP Diliman campus, when the shooting occurred.

Police said three unidentified men on board a white Toyota FX, with plate number UDM 191, fired at David's house at around 8:30 p.m.

The suspects left, but came back a few minutes later and allegedly fired more shots.

David was able to call the police shortly past 9 p.m. The professor’s car, a Toyota Innova, was hit.

GMA-7 news anchor Kara David, daughter of Randy and mother of Julia, told GMA News that it was fortunate that the car was parked near the house’s living room when the strafing occurred.

Kara said her father told her at least four shots were fired.

“Mabuti na lang inilabas ang vehicle kasi yun ang tinamaan, kasi kung hindi deretso sa sala,” Kara said.

“Julia was inside the sala. Nung narinig yung unang shots, pinadapa si Julia. Wala namang nasaktan sa awa ng Diyos.

No death threats

Meanwhile, Karina Constantino-David, the professor’s wife, said she does not know anyone who may have the motive to harm her husband.

Karina said  they have never received any death threats. She also denied offers of security from the police.

"Wala kaming kaaway, wala kaming threats. We were offered security but we dont need it," Karina said.

A .45 caliber and a 9mm pistol were used by the suspects based on the bullets retrieved by police at the crime scene.

Presidential Political Adviser Ronald Llamas also arrived at the house of the David family to show support.

The police said they will also examine footage from a closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) belonging to David’s neighbor.

David is a retired sociology professor at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, and a columnist for the broadsheet Philippine Daily Inquirer. – with reports from Jacque Manabat, ABS-CBN News; and Dennis Datu, dzMM
